SOLE E PIANETI IN UN QUADRO DI VAN GOGH. Questo famoso quadro del pittore olandese Vincent Van Gogh, è stato spesso oggetto di interesse per studiosi dell’arte e anche per astronomi. In quel bellissimo e turbinoso cielo sono infatti ben visibili tre oggetti celesti, per alcuni astronomi quattro, anche Mercurio. Non tutti sono d’accordo su quali elementi celesti siano dipinti. E mentre non ci sono dubbi sulla Luna, alcuni ritengono che alla sinistra della Luna ci sia il Sole, altri che sia invece una stella. Il quadro fu dipinto quando Van Gogh soggiornava in Provenza, e dalle lettere inviate al fratello Teo, i critici hanno indicato la data del 17 maggio 1890, come data di inizio dell’opera.

This famous painting by the Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, has often been an object of interest for art scholars and also for astronomers. In that beautiful and swirling sky three celestial objects are clearly visible, for some astronomers four, even Mercury. Not everyone agrees on which celestial elements are painted. And while there is no doubt about the Moon, some believe that on the left of the Moon there is the Sun, others that it is instead a star. The painting was painted when Van Gogh stayed in Provence, and from the letters sent to his brother Teo, the critics indicated the date of 17 May 1890, as the starting date of the work.

Quel giorno la disposizione degli astri era proprio quella che sembra essere indicata nel quadro. Luna, Sole, Mercurio e Venere. Come si può vedere nella figura sotto.

That day the arrangement of the stars was exactly what appears to be indicated in the picture. Moon, Sun, Mercury and Venus. As can be seen in the figure below.

Sole o un altra stella?

Sicuramente nel cielo di quel mattino nessun occhio umano avrebbe potuto distinguere Luna, Venere e Mercurio. Se invece il Sole non fosse il Sole ma una stella (Algol ?), che fine avrebbe fatto il Sole? Oppure è solo tutto una coincidenza?

Surely in the sky of that morning no human eye could have distinguished Luna, Venere and Mercury. If instead the Sun was not the Sun but a star (Algol?), What would the Sun have done? Or is it just a coincidence?
